Jul. 21st, 2024 11:09 pmSo, Biden. I feel for him. I'm actually angry on his behalf, because the pressure on him to not run again have always seemed so unfair! It's not like he did anything wrong, and I'm not sure he's actually mentally unfit, so much as he was tired. But he had a real perception problem once members of his own party started questioning -- publicly -- if he was fit for office. The longer that went on the harder it was to argue against it, and I do think we're probably past the point of no return on that point. No matter the truth, too many people know the question was raised over and over again. It's hard to get people to actually turn up for him if that's the story they keep hearing.
I do like what I know about Harris (which isn't enough). And I think she's got a really unique opportunity, being able to tap into Biden's record -- which is really strong! -- but also being able to present a fresh start. It lets the Dems show they respond to people's concerns and aren't a cult of personality, that it's the platform and the administration more than the person at the head of it, which is a stark contrast to Trump. But at the same time, she's a woman and she's black. It's depressing to think this election could come down to just how sexist and racist America is.
The election seems more winnable today than it did yesterday. But also so many open questions. It's scary.
At a deeply personal level, I'm glad President Biden decided to step down. It gives me permission to stop obsessing in a way that really wasn't healthy. Here's hoping a change can be as good as a rest. Not that that changes the political reality of course.
Also, I got my NC ID this weekend. The process was actually ridiculously stressful, but done is done.
A good week to you all!

Date: 2024-07-22 11:11 am (UTC)I agree, this change in leadership might be the best thing ever and Kamala is the perfect person for the job (if she can get the nomination). Biden was missing too much, even simple things were getting jumbled. He's still got a lot of sharp mind, but I think he'd do much better in an advisory capacity.

I've seen other people say this, but for some reason I don't think that will be such a huge obstacle. I think America is by and large excited to expand the diversity of the executive branch. I do think she has some other serious obstacles, though... Mostly that every clip I've ever seen of her, she acts like she's coming down from a hit of laughing gas. I hope she can get that under control and present a more "presidential" demeanor. If she can do that, she might just pull this off.
