marta_beeI went out to the movies tonight for the first time in a month, then came back and a Certain Fuzzy Pants McGee is extra cuddly. Purring up a storm crawling into my lap and rubbing against my cheek. It's like he thought I was never ever coming back, which does make some sense. It's probably been weeks since I've left the apartment longer than it takes to go across the street to pick up mail.
The movie in question was the new Spider-Man. It was good, but not the kind of thing that really swept me away. Visually pretty cool, thematically had some interesting tie-ins with some early not-quite-Marvel movies I don't want to go into for spoilers, interesting use of lots of different characters, all that. It does have some really interesting insight into what it means to be a superhero and the ethics around that, dueling identities and all, but I don't expect the franchise will explore its deeper implications. Probably that's more a fanfic kind of thing anyway.
I did like how individualized the way different parts of NYC were treated. Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, etc., and I got the feeling they were pulling from specific neighborhoods out there. It felt a bit like coming home, I guess, for all I only ever lived in the Bronx and Harlem.
I did also catch the trailer for the new Hunger Games movie, which is scheduled to come out a little over two weeks after the Midterms election, and for a story that's really about navigating fascism that's really an interesting choice. It could really hit differently depending on how the elections turn out and they have absolutely no control over that. It fascinates me.
Maybe I care more about politics these days and it won't be such a big deal.
I've more or less drafted the news round-ups for next week. Some need some pretty significant editing, but it feels nice to have that close to lined up before we get to the actual week-week, or even the end of the weekend. Makes me feel more on top of things, I guess, even if it's not fanfic. Plus this week I got into some more thorough, personal reflection so I'm doing more than just summarizing. It's almost like I'm still an actual writer, even if it's not fanfic. :-)
Anywho, hope my fellow Americans are enjoying your long weekend, and the rest of you are enjoying a bit of rest.

Date: 2026-09-14 02:17 am (UTC)What I was zeroing in on, and what really caught my attention (SPOILERS....) is how Peter Parker is developing tech to suppress certain parts of his spider DNA, basically to become a more acceptable, controllable kind of Spider-Man. The ethical discussions around it really reminded me of the original X-Men trilogy with Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, and particularly the drug the non-mutants are developing to "cure" the mutants, the one Rogue eventually takes in the third movie. This question of accepting who you are vs. fitting in and "passing" as more normal just seemed like a big part of both stories, and since a lot of this movie seemed to be about setting up a new X-men squad, it did seem interesting they might go back to that. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but that's definitely the main takeaway I took from it.
